Nerhu Yuva Kendra

Nerhu Yuva Kendra Nahan (Sirmaur) is an autonomous body under Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India established in the year 1972 with the objective of providing rural youth avenues to take part in the process of nation building as well providing opportunities for the development of their personality and skills. NYKS is the largest grassroots level youth organization; one of its kind in the world. It channelizes the power of youth on the principles of voluntarism, self-help and community participation.
Over the years, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan has established a network of youth clubs in villages, where Nehru Yuva Kendras have been set up. NYKS has targeted to identify areas of harnessing youth power for development by forming Youth Clubs, which are village level voluntary action groups of youth at the grassroots level to involve them in nation building activities. The core strength of NYKS lies in its network of youth clubs. Youth Clubs are village based organizations working for community development and youth empowerment.
The basic objective for creation of youth clubs is to render community support through developmental initiatives involving activities with focus on youth empowerment. The implementation of programmes and activities of youth clubs is based on local needs and requirements by mobilizing resources from various government departments and other agencies, which include both national, State level and multilateral institutions. The youth clubs and its member volunteers form the base of the NYKS’s vast national rural network.

Objectives

  • To involve the rural youth in nation building activities.
  • To develop such skills and values in them with which they become responsible and productive citizens of a modern, secular and technological nation. Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan has been working in various fronts of youth development with a variety of youth programmes of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and certain special programmes in coordination and cooperation of other ministries. Focus has been on developing values of good citizenship, thinking and behaving in secular ways, skill development and helping youth to adopt a productive and organized behavior.

Vision

Vision of the organization focuses on developing long term strategies for good citizenship and youth leadership at the grass root level. Youth Clubs are formed and encouraged to participate in sports, cultural and local development activities. Youth leadership is developed in the course of formation and sustenance of youth clubs. This leadership becomes highly useful in creating: –

  • Networks of volunteership.
  • Opportunities of participation in fundamental democratic practices of polity and development; and,
  • Instruments of empowerment of youth like skill-generation, awareness creation about health, life skills, and self-employment.
    Considering the fact that almost three-fourth of the Indian population is rural, the development of the nation as a whole depends on their progress and development. Besides, the demographic dividend that the country has enjoyed because of the larger segment of youth population, makes it almost mandatory for the largest youth organization like NYKS to take up more and more of such programmes as will promise empowerment of youth.

Programmes in a district

Part 1 – Core Programme

  • Youth Club Development Programme (YCDP) – It is to strengthen existing network of Youth Clubs with representation from all sections of society.
  •  Training on Youth Leadership and Community Development (TYLCD) – It will enhance capacities of young people to take leadership to help others to live a meaningful life and contribute towards nation building
  • Promotion of Sports (a. Block Level Sports Meet and b. District Level Sports Meet) – It is to promote Sports Culture & Spirit of Sportsmanship among rural youth.
  • Skill Up-gradation Training Programme (SUTP) – It is to develop vocational skills of rural young women and enabling them to supplement their family income as well as enhancing their self-esteem in the society as well as to empower them to address issues and concerns confronting them in their day to day life.
  • District Level Promotion of Art and Culture – It will provide opportunity to rural youth to display their folk cultural talent and facilitate in preserving and promoting the same.
  • Observance of Days of National Importance, National Youth Day and Week – It is to generate awareness about the objective, theme and importance behind a particular day of national and international importance
  • District Youth Convention – It will provide opportunity and platform to rural youth leaders to display products & express themselves, share experiences and suggest best practiced programmes for the youth empowerment.
  • Awards to Outstanding Youth Clubs (AOYC) – at District, State and National Level, Awards to Outstanding Youth Clubs (AOYC) at District, State and National Level.

Part 2 – Other Activities & Initiatives

Meeting of District Advisory Committee on Youth Programmes (DACYP). It is to ensure proper programme planning, coordination, implementation, transparency and monitoring for effective functioning of district NYKs with expected outcomes.

National Youth Corps (NYV)

The Government has launched a new Scheme “National Youth Corps” during the financial year 2010-11 to tap the potential of the youth and channeling their energy towards nation building. This is in pursuance of the President’s Address to both Houses of Parliament in June 2009 and also the Prime Minister’s announcement in October 2009 for Jammu & Kashmir. The new scheme, called “National Youth Corps” (NYC) has been launched, amalgamating the existing two volunteer schemes namely National Service Volunteer (NSV) and Rashtriya Sadbhawana Yojana (RSY).

Objectives:-

  • To set up a group of disciplined and dedicated youth who have the inclination and spirit to engage in the task of nation building.
  • To facilitate the realization of inclusive growth (both social and economic).
  • To act as points for dissemination of information, basic knowledge in the community.
  • To act as group modulators and peer group educators.
  • To act as role models for the younger people specially towards enhancement of public ethics, probity and dignity of labour.

Eligibility

Young men and women falling in the age group of 18-29 would be eligible to become volunteers.

Honorarium

The volunteers will be paid an honorarium of Rs. 5000/- per month for their engagement upto two years (including the period of training which will be for 4 weeks) in the identified development activities.
The NYC Scheme enables young men and women in the age group of 18-29 years to serve up to two years on a full time basis for which they receive an honorarium of Rs 5000/-per month. Representation from the weaker sections of the society and gender balance is encouraged.
